In choosing a boarding school, here are three keys to finding the right one:

  1. History – Delve into how long the school has been around. One that has been around for decades is doing something right. If it is a newer boarding school, do not discount it because it is new. Knowing the history of a boarding school can go a long way in helping you make the right decision for your child. As part of that history, talk to other parents in your circle of friends. See which boarding schools they may have sent their children to. This can give you some good insight in giving consideration to a boarding school.

  1. Curriculum – If your child is struggling at school, is one of the major reasons the curriculum? In the event it is, you might discover that the curriculum at a boarding school of your choosing is far superior. Classes that challenge your child can be the best thing for them. When they have to study hard to get good grades, it can help prepare them for college down the road. Taking some college prep courses gives your kid a better idea of what to expect when going off to college.

  1. Activities – Yes, your child’s main reason for school is to study and achieve the best grades possible. That said you also would like if they were active in events outside of the classroom. This can mean everything from the performing arts to sports and much more. Keep in mind that being active out of class can improve your child’s chances of one day going to the college. What if they get a scholarship to the college or university they want as a result of their play at a boarding school? While you should never push your kid to do one or more organized activities out of the classroom, they do not hurt.
