Why Motorcyclists Are More Likely to Die in an Accident

While motorcycles are popular on roads and thrilling to ride, they are among the most dangerous forms of transportation in the country. That is because they are often less visible to pedestrians and other motorists. Therefore, they are more likely to get involved in traffic accidents for reasons ranging from motorcycle lane splitting, a driver making a left turn in front of an oncoming motorcycle rider, drunk driving, speeding, and more.

Compared to occupants in closed vehicles such as cars, vans, trucks, and buses, motorcycles are 28 times more likely to die in an accident per mile traveled. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that fatalities reached a historic low of 5,014 deaths in 2019, and the number has remained at or near the 5,000 mark yearly since then.

But why are riders at a higher risk of severe injuries and deaths in the event of a crash?

Minimal Protection For The Motorcycle Rider

When a motorcycle crash occurs, regardless of the cause, the rider is at a greater risk of serious injury or even death. The reason for this is simple. Unlike motor vehicle occupants, motorcyclists lack the steel enclosure, seatbelts, airbags, and other safety features. That means there is nothing to protect the motorcycle rider from the hard surfaces or pavement, increasing the possibility of severe injuries or even death.

    Motorcycles Are Less Stable

Unlike four-wheeled vehicles, motorcycles are less stable and require more attention to steer and control. That means when a rider engages in dangerous driving activities such as lane splitting, even at low speeds, they are more likely to get involved in fatal accidents. This is mainly because of close proximity to nearby vehicles, reduced space for maneuvering, and the fact that motorists are not anticipating a motorcycle to pass them in stopped or slow traffic.

    Fewer Safety Features

Modern vehicles come with lots of automated features such as blind-spot monitoring, electronic stability control, lane departure warnings, and collision avoidance systems. Coupled with standard vehicle safety features like airbags, seat belts, and antilock brakes, these modern technologies work to reduce the possibility of an accident and lower the risk of severe injuries if a crash happens.

While motorcycle safety has seen many technological advancements over the years, motorcycles require more human effort to ride. In other words, bikes require active rider participation to prevent a crash and ensure a smooth ride.

Your Options If You Get Injured In A Motorcycle Accident

Being injured in a motorcycle accident can be stressful. Fortunately, you may qualify to recoup compensation for all resulting damages, especially if the accident was due to someone else’s fault.

However, you need to file an injury claim against the negligent party to make sure you get the compensation you deserve. Hiring a knowledgeable and well-experienced personal injury lawyer to handle your personal injury case can make a significant difference when it comes to recovering a full and fair settlement.
