What Are You Expected To Do As A Law Intern? – Welcome to Career Advisor

Going to law school can be tough, but just because you graduate doesn’t mean you will have job offers lining up for you to choose from. The next step of finding the right job for you could be becoming a legal intern. Here are five benefits of doing a legal internship.

    1. Learning from Others

In the classroom, there are only a few voices that you hear during those years and that is your professors. While they are experienced and knowledgeable the best place to really learn is by watch people who are really doing it. Being an intern allows you to watch the reality of the job and to put into practice what you learned at the university. If you are unsure about doing a legal internship you can follow others who have done it like Rachel Lader.

As you build relationships, this networking can come back to help you as you try to get hired. You can even meet other interns with who you can work and network with for years to come.

    2. Building a Resume

You need something that puts you above other applicants for a job. You will shine brighter if they can see that you have gotten some real-life experience through an internship. On your resume, you will want to list some of the exact tasks that you completed or any projects that you worked on that a potential employee might find impressive.

    3. Leads You to a Career

There are two ways that a legal internship can lead you towards a career. The first is when you work as an intern when a spot opens up for a job you are right there and available to take the job. You might find that you can more easily get hired at a firm where you are interning.

The second way that a legal internship leads you to a career is by giving you a chance to try out different fields which can either help you choose what you like or stay away from what you don’t like. Internships are a great way to help clear the way for the right career choice for you.

    4. Gives You Experience

There is no way to experience a career unless you actually do it, unfortunately, it is hard to get anyone to hire you without experience. That can become a hard cycle to get out of. Luckily, legal internships are the answer. It is a way for you to learn professional skills and use your knowledge to then benefit a career later.

    5. Understand the Law

Law school is a lot to take in and sitting in the classroom you are able to soak in the information but not always the real-world use. A legal internship gives you that opportunity to really get to learn the information on a deeper level. This fuller understanding of what you learned in law school can really benefit you when taking the bar exam.

A legal internship is an important part of being a law student. It gives you a better understanding of the law and allows you to build relationships and give you experience that will put you ahead of other job applicants.
