School Bus Safety Tips
For kids…
When waiting for the bus, stay about six feet (three big steps) away from the curb to stay clear of traffic. Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching. Look both ways before crossing the street to get on the bus. It’s best to walk your child to the bus stop and stay with them until it arrives.
When getting off the bus, be sure to look left, right, and left again before crossing the road – not all cars will stop for a school bus, like they’re supposed to. Walk in a wide path – about five big steps – in front of the bus before crossing the street, to ensure that the driver can see you.
Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before standing up to get off.
Never walk behind the bus.
If you feel unsafe, be sure to tell an adult. Most bus drivers are well-trained professionals, but there have been rare cases involving bus drivers texting or dozing off behind the wheel. Teach your child that it’s okay to tell a parent or teacher if they notice something is wrong.
For drivers…
Always watch your speed and stay extra alert in school zones and during the times of day when children are heading to school. Never attempt to pass a bus that is coming to a stop!
