There are so many stories out there but not all appear in the headlines of newspapers or other media houses. However, certain factors determine whether a story is newsworthy or not.

As usual, when the stories that are considered newsworthy are too much, then it is most likely that the story with all the factors listed here would be the perfect choice of the editor.

In most cases, editors have to consider these factors before they publish a particular story on the platform. Most times, the first story to be dropped is time-sensitive news.

Timing

As the name implies, the news means new happenings. Usually, what makes a piece of good news are topics that are current and relevant. Most people are often eager to hear the current news. No wonder, old news is often discarded as soon as a story starts making the rounds.

Stories with average interest are often told quickly and discarded as soon as a new one pops up. If it happens now, it becomes news but it is no longer news if it happened last week. In other words, determine what becomes newsworthy.

Significance

The significance of a story is determined by the number of people it affects or it would affect. In most cases, if the news would be for a few minorities, it may not make the news. The attention of most news houses is drawn to the significance of the story.

For instance, if a fire outbreak that affects a hundred happens and a celebrity has a bike accident, the fire outbreak would make news for weeks. Although the news about the celebrity will make headlines but not for long compared to the fire outbreak.

Proximity

Stories that happen near the editor or news house are considered news and more significant. The closer the story is to the more newsworthy it is considered. For instance, it would be very rare for a story that happened in France to become a headline in the US. Although it happens sometimes, to get that attention it must have an international undertone.

Prominence

Undoubtedly, VIPs tend to get more attention from news agencies. Assuming you break your arm while playing tennis, it would not make the headlines. But if Serena breaks a finger, it would be news the next day.

Human Interest

This particular factor tends to break all the rules. The news doesn’t need to affect a major part of the population to become news. If there’s little interest from top players in the country or world leaders, it tends to make news.

What’s more, human interest stories always tend to evoke responses and appeal to the emotions of people. However, these stories often have a separate section in newspapers or other news platforms.

Final Take

A story must be new and interesting to be newsworthy. Importantly, the story must have the ingredients listed here to make the headlines on major news platforms worldwide. Visit World News Times for verified news happening around the globe.
